How we made props (blood)

Making artificial blood 

We used icing sugar, food colouring, water, cacao and coffee to make our own blood. We thought using this instead of artificial blood will look better on the screen.

These videos show how we filmed our title sequence. We repeated many shots just in case if the others were ruined or were inaccurately filmed.

Our plan for today

Changing the name of our Tile-Sequence

We decided to change the name of our title sequence because we came to the conclusion that our previous decision of the name was too long and inapproipjte. This is because Camps Bay High school name did not suit our film because we clearly see the original name of the school in the title sequence. To not cause confusion we decided to name the title sequence Dissection which is clearly suitable to name our title sequence.

Why DISSECTION?

It makes sense to name our film Dissection because our main character is a serial killer and a science teacher. Therefore, it is likely our character will be associated with killing and things to do with cutting.

Rough cut 1

Reflection of what we've done so far.

So far we've been able to film :

• Our main setting which is the lab
• Shots of Ali playing the teacher role
• The teacher putting on a pair of latex clothes to mirror an actual doctor
• The tattoo on the teacher's hand
• Many different shots of the scalpel's used by the teacher
• The teacher washing blood off both his hands and scalpel

What we have left to film :

• Georgina being used as a student and victim
• Stained blood on Georgina's uniform

Mini - evaluation 

We have kept to our storyboard and original plan even though we've had some difficulties getting there. At first we thought it'd be simple but then we realised making stuff such as the blood would be harder than we thought.

Filming evidence: Using lighting

In these shots we filmed Ali's face but we tried to use the lighting from the blinds to add affect to Ali's face. This made his face creepier and changed the mood. Also, we thought this would be a very effective ending to our film.

We are planning to film the last scenes on the storyboard. These include:
-filming the tattoo scenes.
-filming the small parts of the title sequence, e.g. opening door.
-re-filming the scenes that was not appropriate. For examples, we found out that some of the scenes were too dark so we decided that we are going to re-film the scenes with lighting.

1) Would our film be an independent or mainstream production?

Seeing as our title sequence is a Horror, mainstream productions seem more appealing. This is because a mainstream production reaches out to more people due to a wider target audience. They also tend to consist of blockbusters e.g. Avatar. Mainstream productions are also shown in multiplex cinemas whereas independent films are not, meaning you would have to search for a screening.

2) Who will distribute our film?

The name of our production company is 'Red Cobra'

3) A distribution company similar to ours.


Lionsgate have produced many horrors such as Saw, Texas Chainsaw and See No Evil.

4) What films have they produced that is similar to our ideas?
 American Psycho. Made in 2000. This is similar to our idea as the storyline is of an ordinary business man who has a secret like. He likes to murder women for a living. This makes the company of Lionsgate a good choice as we can analyse the techniques used and try to adapt that to use in our title sequence.

Pitch task 2 : What type of title sequence is it? - Jana

As a group we have planned that our title sequence will be discrete. It will be very mysterious and not clear what's really happening. The reason we have chosen to do this is because a title sequence which is discrete can be more detailed than one that has narration and a straightforward message.

One title sequence that has influenced our own title sequence is the Thriller Seven. The reasons why we were so heavily influenced by the title sequence of Seven is because it is similar to our original idea. The key moments that we saw as most influential were 0:55 - 1:00, 1:19 - 1:23, 1:35 - 1:40, 2:17 - 2:20. In all of these times suspense is created as it is not clear what the images mean. For example between 0:55 - 1:00 a somewhat crippled hand appears and raises the questions of 'Why is this hand relevant?', 'What connection does this have with the movie, if anything at all?' etc. The fact that we see blood dripping and a picture of a face at 1:35 - 1:40 creates confusion via discretion as the audience doesn't exactly know what's going on.



The second title sequence to influence our discrete title sequence is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The first piece to influence us is between 0:58 - 1:03. This because many things happen back to back and then ends with a face showing. This face is mysterious and looks like it may be a mask or a normal face with ink all over it.  The main part is between 1:13 - 1:48. This consists of many different things such as a man/giant drowning at 1:18, an up-close image of an eye watering at 1:33 and a face getting punched at 1:37. All these things seem random and yet somehow relate to the movie. And in theory that's how we want our title sequence to be.




Our overall idea would be to adapt these title sequences. In Seven, the storyline isn't 100% adapted or clear which is why we will aim to make our title sequence similar to this. However, we will avoid making our title sequence as confusing as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, we don't want too much going on to the point where the audience doesn't understand what is happening.
