These videos show how we filmed our title sequence. We repeated many shots just in case if the others were ruined or were inaccurately filmed.

Our plan for today

Changing the name of our Tile-Sequence

We decided to change the name of our title sequence because we came to the conclusion that our previous decision of the name was too long and inapproipjte. This is because Camps Bay High school name did not suit our film because we clearly see the original name of the school in the title sequence. To not cause confusion we decided to name the title sequence Dissection which is clearly suitable to name our title sequence.

Why DISSECTION?

It makes sense to name our film Dissection because our main character is a serial killer and a science teacher. Therefore, it is likely our character will be associated with killing and things to do with cutting.

Reflection of what we've done so far.

So far we've been able to film :

• Our main setting which is the lab
• Shots of Ali playing the teacher role
• The teacher putting on a pair of latex clothes to mirror an actual doctor
• The tattoo on the teacher's hand
• Many different shots of the scalpel's used by the teacher
• The teacher washing blood off both his hands and scalpel

What we have left to film :

• Georgina being used as a student and victim
• Stained blood on Georgina's uniform

Mini - evaluation 

We have kept to our storyboard and original plan even though we've had some difficulties getting there. At first we thought it'd be simple but then we realised making stuff such as the blood would be harder than we thought.

Filming evidence: Using lighting

In these shots we filmed Ali's face but we tried to use the lighting from the blinds to add affect to Ali's face. This made his face creepier and changed the mood. Also, we thought this would be a very effective ending to our film.

We are planning to film the last scenes on the storyboard. These include:
-filming the tattoo scenes.
-filming the small parts of the title sequence, e.g. opening door.
-re-filming the scenes that was not appropriate. For examples, we found out that some of the scenes were too dark so we decided that we are going to re-film the scenes with lighting.

1) Would our film be an independent or mainstream production?

Seeing as our title sequence is a Horror, mainstream productions seem more appealing. This is because a mainstream production reaches out to more people due to a wider target audience. They also tend to consist of blockbusters e.g. Avatar. Mainstream productions are also shown in multiplex cinemas whereas independent films are not, meaning you would have to search for a screening.

2) Who will distribute our film?

The name of our production company is 'Red Cobra'

3) A distribution company similar to ours.


Lionsgate have produced many horrors such as Saw, Texas Chainsaw and See No Evil.

4) What films have they produced that is similar to our ideas?
 American Psycho. Made in 2000. This is similar to our idea as the storyline is of an ordinary business man who has a secret like. He likes to murder women for a living. This makes the company of Lionsgate a good choice as we can analyse the techniques used and try to adapt that to use in our title sequence.

Pitch task 2 : What type of title sequence is it? - Jana

As a group we have planned that our title sequence will be discrete. It will be very mysterious and not clear what's really happening. The reason we have chosen to do this is because a title sequence which is discrete can be more detailed than one that has narration and a straightforward message.

One title sequence that has influenced our own title sequence is the Thriller Seven. The reasons why we were so heavily influenced by the title sequence of Seven is because it is similar to our original idea. The key moments that we saw as most influential were 0:55 - 1:00, 1:19 - 1:23, 1:35 - 1:40, 2:17 - 2:20. In all of these times suspense is created as it is not clear what the images mean. For example between 0:55 - 1:00 a somewhat crippled hand appears and raises the questions of 'Why is this hand relevant?', 'What connection does this have with the movie, if anything at all?' etc. The fact that we see blood dripping and a picture of a face at 1:35 - 1:40 creates confusion via discretion as the audience doesn't exactly know what's going on.



The second title sequence to influence our discrete title sequence is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The first piece to influence us is between 0:58 - 1:03. This because many things happen back to back and then ends with a face showing. This face is mysterious and looks like it may be a mask or a normal face with ink all over it.  The main part is between 1:13 - 1:48. This consists of many different things such as a man/giant drowning at 1:18, an up-close image of an eye watering at 1:33 and a face getting punched at 1:37. All these things seem random and yet somehow relate to the movie. And in theory that's how we want our title sequence to be.




Our overall idea would be to adapt these title sequences. In Seven, the storyline isn't 100% adapted or clear which is why we will aim to make our title sequence similar to this. However, we will avoid making our title sequence as confusing as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, we don't want too much going on to the point where the audience doesn't understand what is happening.

Our finalized Genre

We've concluded that the genre we have chosen to recreate, will be horror. We all agreed that this would be the most appropriate genre for us to reinvent, as most of our ideas for a title sequence related to the genre of horror. Additionally, when we were coming up with ideas for the "6 minute challenge" task (that involved all the props and situations we were given), we decided that our initially spontaneous idea for our title sequence's genre, was one we came to be really rather satisfied with, and that it was something we were considering taking seriously and incorporating it into our title sequence.
So eventually, we all agreed that the genre we all had an interest in pursing was that of  the horror genre, and all the codes and conventions it included. 

This decision, later came with the mutual agreement, that the sub-genre of  our film would be "slasher" or "slasher -horror". This was decided as it was the most sensible and achievable sub genre for us to portray, as its particular codes and conventions - such as blood, gore, and non - lethal objects turned weapons, would be significantly easier and more realistic to portray than for example; Paranormal horror - as this would've probably required complex computer technology which we do not have access to. As a group we understood that our budget would mean we'd have to be practical and think carefully about our sub genre's codes ad conventions. 

Ultimately, our finalized sub genre would be Slasher - Horror.

Feedback for the first draft. 

We found out that we may need to add more scenes and change the format of the shots. We will need to make it clear about our exact location so we will add a shot of the school building, so it could make it clear to the audience about where the film is set. We may need to include the following:

-Ident of production and distribution company

-Add title credits and where we will see them

-Include where match cuts and cross cutting will take place

However, we had positive feedback about how it is simple and clear. Also, my teacher thought it was suitable for a horror film.

I'd always intended to create a horror title sequence. As a group we'd made it clear this was the genre we wanted to convey in our final product, and I've always been very much content with it.

As for actual story line or plot of the film (title sequence), my original idea was;

For the plot to immediately appear to be set in classroom, where nothing seems to be particularly out of place. We get an overview of the students in the classroom, with a predominant focus on the key/main student character, nothing at all unusual about the students either. We then have our first introduction to the class's teacher. A young, fit, healthy-looking male in possibly his late 20's/early 30's. Again, seemingly, just an average teacher. It's the occurrences that are shown in our second location that really alert the viewers.
Unbeknownst to the students and faculty, somewhere in the school lies a concealed, locked off room, in which an unidentified psychotic, sociopath  with a morbid fixation on human dissection, secretly uses to experiment on his unwilling subjects. This room is referred to as "the operating theater.
Inconveniently, the school is victim to a sudden loss of electricity - a blackout, in which our villain, seizes the perfect opportunity to abduct his carefully selected victims, without the intention of returning them to their back to said classroom alive. At the disadvantage of not being able to see, the class must join forces and put aside their cliques and social groups, to prevent as many people disappearing from the classroom as possible.

Our Initial Ideas for Our title sequence

As a group, we always knew our preliminary idea included filming a horror movie title sequence. We concluded that our first, initial location would be in a regular school classroom, with a large whiteboard at the front, and our second, and only other location would be in a concealed, sinister - looking, simplistic operating theater, within the same building as the classroom.

We established that we'd want one particular villain and antagonist, who's role would be a psychotic sociopath, with an unhealthy obsession with the internal aesthetics of the human body, who has access to the school no doubt(!).  The villain in question, would be the only character, with the knowledge of "the operating theater" 's existence, in where he plans to mutilate his victims.

We decided we would include non diegetic sound, which would be a short dialogue between a few key characters, and regular sounds you might hear in a classroom (i.e. school bells etc), as well as, unnerving, creepy sounds you'd hear in the "operating theater" - such as knives/scalpels being sharpened. Additionally we'd also use diegetic sounds, in which we'd have an unsettling, eerie instrumental.

We'd also agreed that, each shot in the title sequence, will be filmed in a different location to the last. This meaning that if one location was to be filmed in the classroom, the very next one would be filmed in "the operating theater", and then the next one in the classroom again etc.

Final Ideas for our Title sequence

We decided that we are going to stick with our initial plan that we came up with in the "6 minute challenge". Our finalised genre is horror, and we agreed we wanted out title sequence to be as frightening as possible.

Our final idea:
 Camps Bay High school. A public school no different to any other. Unbeknownst to the students and staff, the school contains a hidden operating theatre

Location:
To spilt each shot between our two main locations , which are the classroom and "The operating room". The classroom scenes will be set in a normal classroom in our collage, and the operating room scenes will be filmed in a brightly lit room within the collage, because it should hopefully resemble an actual operating room.

Sound:
We decided that a slow - building, eerie instrumental would be the most appropriate for our title sequence. It would be on a relatively low volume, as we're going to have a brief dialogue between teacher and students, in the classroom scenes.

The four main types 

1.The title on a blank screen 

This title opening sequence uses a blank screen with titles/credits edited on top, this is one of the easiest to create and has been used in many title sequences over the years, as technology and film has evolved the three other types have slowly become more popular as credit designers have slowly converted title sequence designing as a form of art. One title sequence that i looked at that uses this type is psycho the film opening is very simple but this form has been used in a very
effective way and conveys the genre very well to the audience.

Main conventions:

• creates a high contrast of the credits and background.
• can be made with a low budget 
• simple to make and can deliver institutional information 

2. Titles on still images 

This type of film opening is one of the most popular and is very easy to use if the person creating it wants to make it easier for the audience to identify the genre of the film also it is more creative and more fun to film, the images are easy to create and put in the opening sequence. It is also used to introduce the main characters.

Main conventions:

• More elaborate 
• hints at the tone of the genre 
• accompanies the credits to make longer 
• combines different media (images ect.)

3. Titles on moving images 

This type can be very creative and more difficult to put together, if the moving images are not put together thoughtfully it can then look like it is a trailer rather than an opening. It is more likely that the genre of the film.

Main conventions:

• moving image is used to create a metaphor within the title sequence which therefore makes it easier for the audience to understand the title sequence.
• it is also used as a narrative thread.

4. Titles using animation or motion

This form of titles is very modern and have been used in many films such as James bond. Animation can be integrated into images to create a modern tone to the title sequence, it also adds a different dimension and can be easily formed from the computer making it easier and cheaper to make; less time consuming. 

Main Conventions:

• Digital technology and stylized editing.
• more modern concept

We have chosen the Genre of Horror therefore we tried to make the sound effects as suitable for our genre as possible. Our third sound effect is a door opening and closing. 

We'll start the opening of our a title sequence with a clock. This would show time passing and will be used for suspense. Next we'll have the door opening and closing to go along with the scene when a character enters. Finally the lightening will emphasise on the character to reflect their fear.  

Blogging health check 1

Currently, I should be producing a much more high quality blog. My feedback suggests, I have certain gaps missing in my work. This suggests that i need to be significantly more consistent with my blog posts, and my posting schedule should be much more constant and regular. I should aim to do a couple of blog post everyday or two, rather than leave multiple blog posts to be done all at once, at the end of the week, as well as finishing previously uncompleted posts.  Additionally, I very much intend to use many more media programs and sites, as well as more videos, images and gifs in my blog posts.

Evaluation of our Practical Remake

The video I have embedded at the top is our final remake of Submarine.

Before we started filming we had to analyse a scene from the film Submarine in able to make our own remake. The first thing we noticed was that the Production company was the first thing to be shown against a black background. We then analysed the different shots used and tried our best to copy this with the props we had. We then realised their was only one character which was a young boy who had only a small amount of dialogue.

What went well:
We were able to work as a group when it came to analysing the shots used in the original movie. We were also able to choose our settings quickly even though we didn't have access to an Ocean and so on. When it came to filming Ali we tried to be as accurate as we could when it came to his facial expression and I think we were quite successful with this.

What I would change if we had to do it again:
The first thing I would change would be to include a voice over. I wouldn't include the voice of the actual boy from Submarine. I would include Ali's actual voice to make our remake more realistic and accurate. I would make sure we did a shot more than once so we were able to choose the best one and not just having to settle with whatever we have. The last thing that was a problem was timing. We spent too much time over thinking about how we were going to film and what we was going too film. So when it came to it, it all felt slightly rushed. Other than that I wouldn't change anything else.

After reading my feedback I have realised I need to keep on top of my work to avoid falling behind. My feedback consisted of completing task 15, completing task 13 and task 21. I still have a few things to work on but my feedback has helped me to stay on track.   Another feature I know that I could work on would be to use other sites such as Prezi.

At the moment, I am not struggling with any blogging tasks and I understand the key concepts of title-sequences. My research tasks have given me a clear understanding of how and what type of title-sequences we could produce as a group. I frequently look back at my completed blog tasks to gain more ideas when I plan. However, to improve my blog I need to aim for a few things. These are:

-Finish and catch up to date with important tasks.
-Try to aim to blog up to task 26
-Also, blog by using more ICT programmes. Like Prezi or Powerpoint.
